AirPods can sometimes be hard to spot, due to the differences in their sizes and camera design. They’re generally wireless earbuds with a sleek, all-white case.
Let’s examine the various methods available to determine what AirPods model is yours.
-
Check out the Design of Your AirPods
Apple currently has three main types of AirPods: AirPods Pro (previously AirPods Max), and AirPods Pro (currently AirPods Pro). Look at the product design to identify which type you have.
The AirPods Max, which are over-ear headphones with a microphone, are the most noticeable. If you look at the in-ear buds, the regular AirPods feature plastic tips while the AirPods Pro has silicone tips.
You should note, however, that this method does not identify the type of AirPods you own. To identify which generation of AirPods you have, you will need to use either the serial number or model number.

Identify Your AirPods Model Number
Two ways to find your AirPods model number are available. We’ll discuss them below. Once you have the model number, compare it with the table below to find the AirPods that you own. There are two models for some models. This is because each AirPod has its own number.
You can access your iPhone settings
- Go to the Settings App. Select Bluetooth.
- Find your AirPods in the list.
- Tap For more information (the icon that shows it inside a circle) for the model number.
You can find the underside of your AirPods
If your iPhone is not able to connect to your AirPods, you can look at the undersides of each AirPod. Both the left and the right AirPods will have the model number printed.
You will need to take out the left magnetic ear pillow to see the model # for the AirPods Max headphone-styled AirPods Max.
-
Use Your AirPods Serial No.
You can search for your AirPods serial numbers, and then insert it into Apple’s coverage pages. This will give you details about your device’s warranty and model.
-
Check the charging case of your AirPods
The final method is to verify your AirPods charging bag and use its serial number, model number, and other design details.
If it connects you can use the iPhone Settings method mentioned earlier to find your AirPods model number and serial numbers. Match the numbers with the following list.
- AirPods Lightning Charging Case: A1602
- AirPods 1st & 2nd Generation Wireless Charging Case:
- AirPods 3rd generation MagSafe Charging case: A2566
- AirPods Pro Charging Case: A2190. Serial number ends with the 0C6L
- AirPods Pro MagSafe Charger Case: A2190 Serial number ends with 1059
According to design details, the charging box for the first and second-generation AirPods is rectangular in shape. The status light on a wired charging case will be placed inside the case between the AirPods. If it is wireless, the status lights will be located outside the case on the front.
All other charging bags have a rectangular, horizontal shape. They belong to the AirPods Pro (3rd Generation) and AirPods Pro (4th Generation).
Solved – Which AirPods model do I have?
It is easy to identify the AirPods model by simply looking at the charging case and design. You can identify the serial number of your AirPods model and match it with the information provided by Apple. This is the most accurate way to identify your model number. While you love using your AirPods, be sure to keep them clean.
