But, that’s to be expected in any phone that blends the portability of a standard phone with the benefit of having inner displays that unfold that compete with tablets for screen space. Prices are beginning to come down every so slowly.
Apart from the full-sized foldable, do not forget the clamshell foldable as well. They are less expensive, however, they are also quite different. Instead of unfolding like tablet screens, these fold as flip phones from the past. This is a flagship feature in a smaller size. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the sequel to Samsung Galaxy Fold, fixing its weaknesses and expanding the design features. This Z Fold 2 is an “innie”-foldable device, featuring an external display to perform basic tasks and an internal display that is visible when folded flat.
The screen that is on the other side is a significant upgrade from the tiny one that was on the exterior from the first Fold that has the 6.2-inch Display on this latest foldable device that extends from edge to end. This means that this Galaxy Z Fold 2 looks similar to a standard (albeit large) smartphone when folded down. The display inside folds down to 7.6 inches. The Samsung Galaxy Fold (now renamed the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold) impressed us at its Samsung Galaxy S10 launch in February of 2019 However, we were waiting until April to see if it was finally released. South Korean manufacturers allowed the first media members (including TechRadar) to get acquainted with the gadget.
Initial impressions were positive and, despite the high cost, the smooth interface and the huge 7.3-inch unfolded display was stunning it was the first-ever mainstream foldable on our hands, and it was breathtaking. As the Galaxy Fold’s release date of April 19, 2019, in the US launch date approached some devices in our test failed to function, which caused Samsung to hold off on launching the release of the Galaxy Fold. After some tweaks and the Galaxy Fold was finally released to the general public at the end of last year which is still a fantastic device, even a year after.
The specs of the phone include the 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED display on the front, and the ability to fold a 7.3-inch QHD Dynamic-AMOLED display on the interior, making it possible to use the device like a phone as well as a tablet. The screen on the outside is a bit small when compared to the display that is edge-to-edge that is on the exterior Z Fold 2. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 isn’t an enormous upgrade over earlier versions of the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, however, it’s still superior overall, which makes it the most clamshell-foldable clamshell on the market today.
It’s built well, comes with a powerful performance from its Snapdragon 8GB of RAM. It features a stunning 6.7-inch AMOLED display that has a 60Hz of a refresh.
The display on the other hand is slightly larger and, consequently, a bit more practical and useful this time as well, measuring an incredibly small 1.9 inches.
Like most foldable, the cameras aren’t something to be proud of and the battery isn’t as large as we’d prefer, but for the majority of this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a well-built smartphone and it’s priced at a price that is comparable to a flagship which makes it somewhat of a bargain according to the standards of a foldable phone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is an extremely well-rated clamshell folding device in an extremely small market Its advantages over Motorola Razr 2020 (our number three choice) are not many, but are crucial.
First of all, the Galaxy Z Flip has the advantage on specifications, with an outstanding (for its time) Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset and 8GB of RAM. Dual camera rears (12MP f/1.8 principal as well as 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide) are superior to the Razr’s single camera and Samsung’s photo application is superior. Its battery of 3,300mAh isn’t huge when compared to other phones but it’s still far superior to that of the Razr 2020s.
The folding clamshell lives up to its name, securing with a glossy back that looks like a compact for makeup. This 6.7-inch display is made of plastic however it’s still a decent Full HD+ (2636 x 1080 pixels) It has a thick edge of the plastic to protect it. Go forward, close it with a flurry.
The best part is that you can fold the phone in half and then leave it at any angle. This can be useful when conducting video calls, for instance, or leaving it propped open. The software does a great job of breaking the interface down into two halves: the top and bottom however, it can’t do that when the phone is folded flat. But, there’s no way to expand beyond that point which is why you shouldn’t do it.
Its most obvious flaw is its front-facing display that measures 1.1 inches in length (300 112 pixels) to be precise it’s worth noting that the first Motorola Razr phones launching in 2004 featured a screen with 220 pixels x 176 pixels. The screen of the Z Flip is AMOLED and displays one or two lines of text that provide basic information and even a (very small) glimpse of the selfie you’re planning to take.
Overall this is a stunning folding device, if not in use, however, you’ll have to pay for the novelty. It isn’t much better than flagship models comparable to it (except it can fit into tiny pockets) but it’s priced at $1,380 PS1,300 or AU$1,800 (4G LTE). The model also comes with the more expensive version with the Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset that connects to 5G. It costs $1,449, PS1399 or $2,599.

Motorola revived its Razr series of flip phones in the form of the Motorola Razr the folding “clamshell” phone that mixed innovative technology and a retro style that was reminiscent of that of the Motorola Razr V3, a phone that made waves across the globe when it first launched in 2004. The Razr that was released in 2019 lived up to its promise… in a way, however, it came at a high price and a lot of rough edges.
The updated Motorola Razr 2020 (called the Motorola Razr 5G) has solved the majority of the issues that plagued its predecessor and is an expensive device that provides newness rather than essential technological advancements in design. It’s attractive at a minimum with its comparatively big 2.7-inch displays on the exterior. The display comes with software enhancements that let you do basic tasks like app browsing, texting, and preview selfies with ease as well. Being able to snap selfies using the same lens of 48MP you’re using when your phone is in use is definitely useful.
But, opening the phone is only half the excitement, with the satisfying snapping to place it in the right spot completely unfolded. The phone will not allow you to keep your phone in place or even fully closed or turned completely open, however, you’ll eventually be able to take a picture of a closed call with the same ferocious vigor that you had in the early days of flip phones.
The screen is made of plastic (P-OLED) panel isn’t very impressive but it does have a 2142 x 877 resolution, which is smaller than the full HD display on budget phones. Also, the performance is good however the storage capacity of 256GB isn’t expandable. The battery life is also good with a typical day’s usage but nothing extraordinary.
The Razr 2020 is not a significantly better device than the typical smartphone, but you’ll have to pay for its uniqueness by paying $1,399 or PS1,399 (around $1,900 in Australia) cost. If you’d like to experience the glory days of Razr or need a phone that fits in small purses or pockets however it’s Razr 2020 is the phone for you. Razr 2020 is the phone that you can choose.
