How to Turn on the Flash for Your iPhone Camera

Popular Posts

Some people might find the Camera app confusing with its increasing number of buttons and icons. In low-light environments, you might want to use Night Mode and the flash camera instead. The icons are no longer labeled so it can be difficult to know how to turn on iPhone flash.

Let’s take a look at the flash icons and what steps you can follow to make your iPhone flash in one flash.

What Does the iPhone Flash Icon Mean?

There are many circular icons that you will see in the Camera app for your iPhone. These icons generally follow the following guidelines:

  • The flash icon will flash off if there’s a slash.
  • If it is displayed without a slash and the flash icon is white then the camera flash has been set to auto. In good lighting, it won’t flash and in very poor light it will.
  • If the iPhone camera flash icon in yellow is displayed, it means that it will always flash whenever you take a photo. Your iPhone may think it needs the flash because it is on always-on.

How to Turn on Flash on a Newer iPhone

Your model will have different instructions. Here are the instructions to enable flash on your iPhone 11/12, SE (2nd generation), 13, and so forth.

  1. Open the camera app, swipe away from the shutter, or tap the button.
  2. Tap the flash button.
  3. Tap On for the iPhone camera flash setting to Always-On.

Note that you can also use these steps to turn on your front screen flash when taking selfies.

How to Turn on the iPhone Flash Video

Swipe away from the Record button when you are in the iPhone Camera app’s Video, Slo Mo, or Cinematic modes. Tap On. It will turn on instantly even if you’re not recording. Once you’re ready, tap on the record button and start videography with the flash enabled.

Pano (Panorama), Time-Lapse and Pano (Panorama modes) cannot be used with the iPhone camera flash.

The following steps will help you set up your iPhone’s camera flash so it stays on and is not overridden by Night mode. The flash will be disabled if you choose to disable Night mode.

How to Turn on Camera Flash for Older iPhones

If your older iPhone has a Home button such as an iPhone 6S or 8 (or iPhone SE (1st Generation),) open the camera app. Tap the Flash icon, then choose on. You can also turn on flash for Slo-Mo and Video modes by following the same steps.

The screen flashes when you turn on the front camera for selfies on iPhone 6S or later.

Now you are able to change the iPhone camera flash setting to flash automatically instead of always-on. The newer iPhones automatically go into Night mode in low lighting conditions. Live photos and flash are disabled during Night mode. You now know how to make the camera flash in Night mode.
