Website traffic rankings are predictable. They are dominated by the world’s search, ecommerce and social media giants. New data suggests that there are some notable exceptions (and even taboos) to this rule.

Similarweb analysis shows that Pornhub and Xvideos are the most visited adult websites in America, with an average of 693.5 millions and 639.6million monthly visitors, respectively.

These two giants of pornography outrank many major services like Netflix (541 million), Zoom (6229.5 million), and Twitch (2555.3 million).

These sites are growing at a faster pace than most other high-traffic domains. While the Xvideos userbase has increased by 2.63% monthly, Wikipedia saw page views drop by a similar percentage, while Amazon only achieved a 7.49% increase in traffic.

The most popular websites

Google is the most visited website in the world with 19.5 billion US users per month. This is three times more than any other site. YouTube, also owned by Google, is second on the list with 6.5bn monthly visitors. Facebook comes in at 4.0billion.

Amazon is the US’s largest online retailer, with 2.0 billion visitors monthly. This is in line with the dominance of Walmart and eBay. Similarweb data shows that ecommerce websites such as these have experienced some of the highest rates of growth over recent months.

Yahoo is the publisher that receives the most US traffic. It ranks 5th overall, with 1.8 billion monthly users, and ahead of CNN, ESPN and MSN. The New York Times is a little further down on the list.

While Google is the dominant search engine in the world, DuckDuckGo, a privacy-focused service, has managed to rise to an impressive 18th position. This niche-focused search engine outranks Microsoft Bing and attracts approximately 50 million more visitors each month. This suggests that US internet users are increasingly concerned about data security.
