Safe mode is one way to troubleshoot Windows computers. Microsoft states that you can identify the problem with your computer simply by looking at how it behaves in safe mode. If the problem does not persist in safe mode it is likely that the default settings and basic drivers of your computer are correct. Here’s how to get Windows 10 to safe mode if you are having problems with your computer.

What is Safe Mode?

Your operating system’s diagnostic mode is Safe Mode. Only essential programs and services can run when your computer is in safe mode. This means that you cannot access any third-party software and drivers. This will allow you to identify and fix any issues with your operating system.

How to boot Windows 10 in Safe Mode using the Sign-in Screen

  1. The start menu will open. Click the button at the lower-left corner that looks like the Windows logo.
  2. While clicking Restart, hold down the Shift key. Your computer will then restart in Windows Recovery Environment. The screen will turn blue and have the option to choose an option at the top.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Click Advanced options.
  5. Click Startup Options.
  6. Click Restart.
  7. Press the F4 or 4, when you see the Startup Settings screen. To go online in safe mode, press F5.

After you have done this, your computer will go into safe mode. If you see a message at your top and your resolution has decreased, you can be sure you are in safe mode. ‘

Safe mode allows you to uninstall software, scan your computer for malware, update drivers or perform a system restore.

How to boot in safe mode in Windows 10 using Settings

  1. Click Settings in the start menu. The gear-shaped icon is located just above the power button.
  2. Click Update & Security.
  3. Click Recovery. This will open the left sidebar.
  4. Click on Advanced Startup and then Restart Now. The computer will reboot and you’ll see the Choose an Option screen.
  5. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart from the boot recovery menu.
  6. Next, press the F4 key or the 4 key to see the Startup Settings screen.

How to boot in safe mode from a black screen

You can use safe mode to sign in to your computer if you have trouble signing in. To do this, stop the startup process by three times. These are the steps:

  1. To turn on your computer, press the power button.
  2. Hold down the power button for at least four seconds while Windows starts. Wait until your computer attempts to start. You should wait until your computer is spinning or the progress bar appears.
  3. Turn your computer on and off 3 more times with the power button.
  4. When your computer restarts for the fourth time, Automatic Repair will be activated. You may be asked to create an account or enter your password.
  5. Click Advanced Options if your computer is having problems.
  6. Select Troubleshoot>>>> Restart.
  7. Next, press the F4 key or the 4 key to see the Startup Settings screen.

How to turn off Safe Mode

  1. Use the Windows key + R to access
  2. Type MSConfig in the Open box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click on the Boot tab.
  5. Under Boot options, uncheck the Safe boot box.
