Garmin’s latest free update is a big win for e-bike users

Garmin finally embraces e-bikes with an update to Garmin Edge 1040, which offers “full support for e-bikes” and brand new metrics.

You can view customized data only for e-bikes if your bike is capable of connecting to Edge 1040 via ANT or AT+ wireless connectivity. Garmin Connect allows you to upload a course to the Edge. The Edge will show you the route you plan to take, and if it’s connected to an e-bike, how much battery your bike has.

You can see the remaining battery life of your bike so you can plan when you will reach a charging port. This is a great tool and a good start to Garmin’s integration of e-bikes.

Music controls are now available on e-bikes. The Edge 1040 series now has a visible Intensity Minutes indicator and an updated Training Status. This will import your heart rate variability status from your best Garmin watch, and display your Edge training status.

Edge 1040 users can get the update completely free of charge. You can also download it using Garmin Express or enable automatic updates from your device.

Garmin GPS has a lot of fitness technology that is focused on triathlon-related endurance activities like running and biking. This is a great marriage of Garmin’s transportation and fitness expertise.

We wrote earlier in the year about the Edge 1040 solar. At the time, we said that the computer was not worth the cost when the Edge 1030 was so comparable from a specs standpoint. If you are an ebike owner, this is an excellent opportunity to enhance your riding experience and get some Garmin tech. We recommend that e-bike enthusiasts look into the Edge 1040’s new capabilities, even though it is a costly unit.

Garmin’s flagship computer for cycling may soon have other e-bike features, based on how they operate.
