OVH CEO Octave Claba confirmed the incident on Tweet (opens in new tab). A statement from the company’s website stated that “We are currently facing a major event in our DataCenter in Strasbourg with a building fire declared in SBG2. Although firefighters arrived on the scene immediately, they were unable to control the flames in SBG2. This has affected all services to SBG1, SBG2, SBG3 or SBG4, as the entire site was isolated.
OVH is Europe’s leading hosting provider (opens in new tab). It has four data centers at its French facility: SBG1, SBG2, SBG3, SBG4, and SBG5.

Service disruptions
According to reports, the incident caused disruptions to many major online services including VeraCrypt encryption utility, eeNews Europe news outlet, Deribit cryptocurrency exchange, and many others.
Klaba updated to say that although one of the data centres was destroyed completely, firefighters were able to limit the damage to the other one.
All staff were safe and sound and all are working together to put out the flames at the third data center. Although the fourth data center appears to be unaffected, it seems that it has been taken offline in order to avoid any further damage.
Klaba encouraged users to use their disaster recovery plans to reduce the disruptions caused when its data centers were offline.
