The Wheel of Time season 2, however, has not yet been released. Filming is now complete, according to the official Twitter account of The Wheel of Time. This was confirmed on May 18, by the official Twitter account:
You may wonder why principal photography won’t be returning until 2023, as that’s what we expect. The Lord of the Rings launches on Prime Video September 2.
It is in Amazon’s best interest that its big fantasy hitters do not compete for viewers. That’s the stance that Amazon Studios’ Head for Global TV Vernon Sanders supports. He told TVLine (opens new tab): “We will be very thoughtful about how these shows are released. They are different shows in our minds but we are aware of the genre fans.
Amazon wants The Rings of Power as much attention as possible so don’t be surprised that The Wheel of Time’s second series won’t arrive until March 2023 or April 2023.
Season 2 of The Wheel of Time cast
The Wheel of Time season 2 should see Lan and Moiraine back. (Image credit: Amazon Studios)
While we expect most of the cast from season 1 to return, there is one exception.
- Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Dmodred
- Daniel Henney as Lan Mandragoran
- Rand al’Thor as Josha Stradowski
- Zoe Robins is Nynaeve Al’Meara
- Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere
- Marcus Rutherford as Perrin-Aybara
- Donal Finn is Mat Cauthon
- Fares Fares is The Dark One
- Johann Myers is Padan Fain
The character of Mat Cauthon is the most important casting news for season 2. Barney Harris will not be reprising his role in season 2, with the Witcher, and Cursed actor Donal Finn replacing him as Mat.
We reported in September 2021 that Harris had left the cast. Rafe Judkins, showrunner, declined to comment.
The Wheel of Time’s other major characters are likely to return, despite Mat’s casting change. Fares Fares (Westworld and Chernobyl), portrayed The Dark One in season 1.
It is difficult to predict who else might return. It was expected that characters such as Sophie Okenedo’s Siuan, Kate Fleetword, and Kae Alexander would return to their roles in season 2. However, the plot of the first season was adapted from several books in Jordan’s series. Judkins made some creative decisions that caused the plot to diverge from the one in the books.
It is not clear if The Wheel of Time season 2 will have a different plot than its source material. We may not see Siuan and Liandrin return even though they are in the second and third books of The Wheel of Time, also known as The Great Hunt or The Dragon Reborn.
knows that new characters are coming – and we know some of them.
Ceara Coveney will play an important role in Elayne Trakand, as the tweet above reveals. Elayne is Queen of Andor, Cairhien and one of The Wheel of Time’s most powerful Aes Sedai. She will play a significant role in The Wheel of Time season 2.
Unknown roles have been also given to Natasha O’Keeffe and Meera Syal from Misfits, Filth. Rafe Judkins teased that they would portray “two important characters”, so you can place your bets on who they will be playing.
Here’s a list of all confirmed and rumored Season 2 characters and their actors, as announced by The Wheel of Time on its official social channels (where Aviendha’s concern anyway) and The Wheel of Time’s Instagram fan page.

Will Rand and Egwene reunite in The Wheel of Time season 2 (Image credit: Amazon)
Spoilers for The Wheel of Time season 1 finale.
The Wheel of Time season 2 has many plot threads that must be resolved or picked up .
First, we must be reunited to Rand, aka The Dragon Reborn, who, after defeating The Dark One temporarily, decides to continue his quest alone. The Dragon Reborn, a prophesied and all-powerful channeler for the One Power, is determined to save or destroy the planet. Rand regards himself as a threat to Moiraine, Lan, and his friends. He asks Moiraine for his friends to tell him that he died in the battle against The Dark One, so they don’t have to go looking for him. Rand’s character Josha Stradowski says that the character’s season two arc will revolve around redefining his identity via The Wrap. (opens in a new tab).
Moiraine’s connection to the Source is destroyed by The Dark One. This is where Aes Selai draw their One Power. The dynamic between Lan and Moiraine is likely to change in season 2. Judkins explained to that the upcoming arcs would be entirely original content, created especially for TV.
Judkins stated that “[They] have almost no to do in book 2, but they are number one and second on the call sheet.” In a television season, you can’t ignore Rosamund Pike or Daniel Henney. We looked at the book chapter that they had, and it is so much about their relationship. “What is the core between them? When you really dive in?” That was the most difficult story to tell.
The season 1 finale featured a fan favorite who survived. This will please viewers. Although it seemed that Loial (Hammed Animashaun), the Ogier, also known as Loial, died at Padan Fain’s hands (opens in a new tab (EW), Judkins told Entertainment Weekly) that the gentle giant survived. Thank goodness.
The finale of season 1 teased the arrival of The Seanchan, a seafaring villain who wants to conquer The Wheel of Time’s main continent. When Judkins was asked by (opens new tab), how they will make a splash in The Wheel of Time season 2: “Everything’s following the traditional fantasy format that came out of the first novel. The Seanchan appear out of nowhere in the second book and slap our characters. We wanted them to function in the same way on the show. They are mentioned at the end season 1, but in season 2, they appear and affect the story.
The show will have to return to many of the subplots and branching narratives in its second season. Judkins told that we will “certainly see” more of Lews’ backstory as season 2 progresses. Judkins teased the possible introduction of Gawyn, Faile and Perrin, as well as the possibility that Rand and Min might interact more (per ) (opens in a new tab). Judkins also revealed that Mat was headed for the White Tower, the Aes Sedai stronghold, and not Shadar Logoth as in the season 1 finale.
We expect to learn more about Perrin’s wolfbrother abilities and that our heroes will be able to get the Horn of Valere, which is a key item in The Dark One’s final battle – back after Padan Falin stole it in season 1. Also, the love triangle between Moiraine and Lan will be explored more in depth. Zoe Robins and Daniel Henney, who play Lan, teased their season 2 stories in a chat with inverse (opens new tab).
Judkins spoke out about The Wheel of Time’s second season’s theme. He said that it will “peel back and try to understand the balance between darkness and light they’re trying find within themselves.”
The Wheel of Time’s next episode will cover plot elements from multiple novels. Judkins told EW that this will be similar to the first season. The end of season 2 has a huge round-up that ties everything together and propels us in a new direction, where we have completed all the stories.
We can also expect lots and lots of blood. Daniel Henney said ContentMode: “It’s really difficult for me to not give away too much, but I will say these: two swords and multiple Fades, blood …. lots of blood.”
Rafe Judkins, meanwhile, said TVLine that “More characters are going to die in the show than the books because we can’t carry a cast 2,000 actors for seven years!” So be prepared for your favorite characters possibly dying in the show.
