The best PS5 external hard drives in 2022

Popular Posts

You can solve storage problems on Sony’s new consoles with the best PS5 external hard drives. The HTML5 has a decent 825 GB internal SSD. However, this is not enough to store a large library. Some games can easily exceed 100 GB. You can store all your games in the cloud if you have an excellent Internet connection and plenty of time. You can save time and money by investing in external storage.

Owning one of the best PS5 external hard disks has two advantages. You can store your PS5 games and then transfer them to your console faster than downloading them from Sony’s servers. You can also play PS4 games from an external drive. This means you can free up all your internal SSD space to save for large PS5 titles. What a difference installing an SSD PS5 can make.

Which external hard drives are best for PS5?

You need to know the limitations of external hard drives for PS5 before you purchase one. External storage media is currently available for both PS4 and PS5 games. These drives can be used to play PS4 games, but PS5 games must be copied back to the internal SSD of your system before you can play them. These external drives can be used as a ready-made gaming machine for PS4 games or as a digital archive for PS5 game.

To store external PS5 data, you can purchase either a SSD (solid state drive) or HDD (hard disk drive). This doesn’t require any PS5-specific hardware. Any system that can be used with a computer will work with the PS5. These drives can be formatted by the PS5; however, you will lose all data.

With this information in mind, we found that the WD Black P50 as well as the Samsung Portable SSD T5 were the best PS5 external hard drives. These SSDs have 1 TB storage and are significantly faster than similar HDD models. Although the Samsung is cheaper, the P50 is more affordable. They’re nearly identical speed on a PS5.

The WD Black P10 HDD storage capacity of 5 TB will allow you to back up a large game library. It also copies and loads data faster than other HDDs. Although SSDs will always be faster than SSDs, the WD Black P10 is a great compromise between price, space, and functionality.

Sony will update the firmware of the PS5 in order to make use of its internal expansion port. Here are the results of our PS5 SSD upgrade.

1. Samsung Portable SSD T5

This is the best PS5 external hard drive overall

Specifications

Storage size: 1 TB

Type of storage:

USB-C: Yes

External Power No

+Quick transfer times+Sleek, compact design+Not too expensive

Avoidable reasons

Storage size is not sufficient. Some PS4 transfer slowdown

Out of all models, the Samsung Portable SSD T5 was our top-rated PS5 external hard drive. The 1 TB external hard drive is small and discreet. It also has quiet operation. The SSD T5’s speed at transferring data is what really sells it. The drive was able to copy in 7 minutes, which is the fastest we have tested. Copying Mass Impact: Andromeda took 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The 35 second time it took to load Mass Effect Andromeda onto the SSD T5 was four seconds quicker than when the PS5 loaded the game.

Although 1 TB isn’t a lot of storage, it’s still a significant amount. You are essentially getting twice the storage you have from the PS5’s internal storage. You can’t store a complete library on this amount. We also found that the PS4 game-transfer speeds are not the fastest we tested. These are minor issues in an otherwise excellent accessory.

There are many reasons to buy

+Small profile+Rapid transfers speeds+Inexpensive

Avoidable reasons

-Not much space-Short cables

For less than $100, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD offers excellent storage options. Although you can get HDD storage cheaper, an external SSD is a great option if your plan is to transfer PS5 games frequently or to load PS4 games from the drive. This compact machine has 500GB storage. Although it doesn’t have a lot of storage, it can store about 10 titles with big budgets, as well as a lot more indie and mid-budget books.

Not necessarily storage space is the main draw, but the transfer speeds are what really matter. Extreme Portable SSD was able to move Returnal from the PS5 in just 7 minutes, 12 seconds, while Mass Effect Andromeda took 2:06. Mass Effect Andromeda was also faster to load than the PS5’s internal SSD, taking only 36 seconds.

3. WD Black P50

Specifications

Storage size: 1 TB

Type of storage:

Yes, USB-C

External Power No

+Fast transfer speeds+Stylish design+Loads PS4 games quickly

Avoidable reasons

-Expensive – Not optimized for PS5

Western Digital is the manufacturer of the WD Black P50 hard drive. It’s no surprise that this is one of the most popular PS5 accessories. The SSD has 1 TB of storage, a durable, stylish design, and fast transfer speeds. The SSD had the fastest PS4 transfer speeds and the second-fastest PS5 transfers. P50 copied Returnal to the PS5 in just 7 minutes and 2 second, while Mass Effect Andromeda took 2:04. Mass Effect Andromeda loaded in just 36 seconds, which is three seconds quicker than what the PS5 could do.

The P50 is a very expensive SSD, but it offers similar storage as other SSDs for approximately twice the cost. This is likely because WD designed this hardware with PCs and you can actually get better performance if the P50 is connected to a computer. It’s a great external hard drive for PS5 if you have the cash.

4. WD Black P10

Specifications

Storage size: 5 TB

Type of storage: HDD

USB-C: External Power: No

+Lots and lots of space+Solid design+Reasonable cost

Avoidable reasons

-Middle of the road transfer speed – Doesn’t load PS4 game that fast

The WD Black P10 HDD is the most popular traditional HDD for external PS5 storage. It strikes a remarkable balance between performance and price. Although the P10 isn’t cheap, it doesn’t cost much for 5 TB storage. This is enough space to store hundreds of small titles as well as a lot of expensive ones. A P10 could easily last the life of your PS5 for its entire lifetime.

The P10 is very reliable, provided you aren’t a slave to SSD speeds. The P10 copied Returnal in 11:41 and Mass Effect Andromeda at 8:30, both respectable times for a HDD. It took 53 seconds for Mass Effect to load, so it’s possible that you won’t want to play PS4 games from this drive. Copying the files takes only a few seconds.

There are many reasons to buy

+Tough, durable design+Connects via USB-C+Decent transfer speeds

Avoidable reasons

-Not made with consoles in mind – Slow PS4 load times

The G-Technology ArmorAtd was my biggest surprise when evaluating external PS5 hard drives. It was my first impression that I had misplaced it. The ArmorAtd hard drive is not a console hard disk. It’s one those “rugged” hard drives that can withstand shocks, water, dust, and so on. The ArmorAtd, despite its construction-site design, is extremely affordable and has a lot of storage. It’s also incredibly good at data transfer.

The ArmorAtd was one the fastest HDDs that we tested. It moved Returnal in 12 minutes 55 and Mass Effect Andromeda within 7 minutes 47. It took 58 seconds to resume a game from main menu, which is slower than other HDDs. It is too bulky, heavy, and garish for comfortable use in an entertainment center.

6. Seagate Last of us II

Specifications

Storage size: 2 TB

Storage Type: HDD

USB-C:

External Power No

+Striking design+Quick PS4 Transfer Speeds+Designed with systems in mind

Avoidable reasons

Slow PS5 transfer speeds – More expensive than non-branded gear

Sony doesn’t make any external drives for PlayStation, but the Seagate Last of Us II hard disk is close enough. This HDD is decent and offers 2TB storage. It also features a stylish front design with a logo by Part II. Although the price of the branded logo is higher than those plain black boxes, it’s certainly more appealing than the rest.

Transfer speeds are good: Moving Returnal took 13:49 while copying Mass Effect Andromeda took 6:12. Andromeda took 53 seconds for it to load. This was quite fast among HDDs and a lot slower than SSDs (including the PS5’s internal storage). The Seagate Last of Us II drive may not be the best, but it is good for brand gear.
