The new PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Headset, like its predecessors is a solid performer in sound. It offers surround sound and detail-rich stereo sound. However, new features such as 3D Tempest AudioTech support make this headset a must-have. It’s a top-rated PS5 headset.

It has its limitations – it can run out of battery in 12 hours, the build quality is poor and the 3D effect takes some time to master – but the Pulse3D is a solid PS5 headset that we recommend you get when you finally get your hands onto the console.
PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Bluetooth Headset: Prices and Release Date
The October 30th 2020 release date for the white Sony PlayStation Pulse 3D Wireless Headset was October 30, 2020. It was released two weeks before the launch date of the PS5 on November 12th. A Midnight Black version was launched in October 2021. They are compatible with the PS5 as well as the PS4 and will replace the Sony Platinum Wireless Headset that was released in 2017.
The Sony Pulse 3D Headset is priced at $99/PS89.99/AU$159. This might seem high considering other third-party headsets. However, it’s quite reasonable when you consider all the features the Pulse 3D offers.
You can also check out the Turtle Beach Recon 200, which is compatible with the PS5 at $49.99 / PS29.99 / AU$77.99. However, this will mean that you’ll have to sacrifice sound quality and other features. The PlayStation Pulse appears to have the best price-to performance ratio of any PS5 headset at the moment.
PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Bluetooth Headset: Prices and Release Date
The original Sony Wireless Headphones were designed to match the bulky, black PS3 but the new Pulse 3D Headset perfectly matches it with a two-tone color scheme of black-and-white. The sleek design is complemented by a padded top that fits perfectly around your head. The look is balanced between space age and classic without going too far either way.
The Pulse 3D is 295g in weight. This is about average for an over-ear pair of headphones. The headphones’ cans house 40mm drivers of medium size. How much pressure you put on your head by the cups – it is enough to keep them on and not fall off.
Sony chose to use soft, supple leatherette for its earcups. The bridge is made of plastic that doesn’t feel the least bit fragile. Although silk and metal may have made them cozier and more sturdy, the pleather remains cool and comfortable even after prolonged use. The headset’s cost is also lower because of the plastic.
The controls are located on the outside of the left earcup. They include a rocker to raise or lower chat audio; a toggle for microphone monitoring so you can hear yourself clearly; volume and volume rocks; and a power switch and mute buttons. The included cable can be used to connect any 3.5mm device.
The headset comes with a 3.5mm audio jack so you can use it without the dongle. However, the headset will still be able to play 3D Tempest AudioTech. This will also drain the battery faster. It is best to make sure that the headset is connected to the PS5 via the dongle, and not the headphones.
It’s not something you would wear outside of your home, which is the only problem with this design. The PlayStation Pulse 3D Wireless Headset won’t be the right choice if you want to take your headphones with you wherever you go.
PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Hepset: Performance
The headset can be set up by simply plugging the dongle into one the PS5’s USB ports, and then turning it on. The headset will automatically connect to your TV and direct audio to it. If you don’t want surround sound, you can plug the dongle in to a USB port on a computer.
The Pulse 3D Wireless sounds great once it’s all connected. It has solid stereo and simulated surround sound. The songs on Spotify had less detail and clarity than traditional headphones. Some games, such as Fall Guys and Genshin Impact, didn’t get much benefit from the headphones. However, the stereo and simulated surround sound experience was good, if not outstanding.
The real reason you will want to purchase the Pulse 3D wireless is its compatibility and sound quality with Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech. This technology gives first-party games a more immersive and realistic sound experience. The Pulse 3D with Spider-Man allowed for more realistic sounds in cities, while Sackboy gave each sound an individual directionality.
At launch, the list of games that supported 3D Tempest AudioTech is quite limited. It was initially just Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man remastered. Gran Turismo 7, Returnal and Destruction AllStars have been added.
Due to the limitations of 3D sound, the headsets did not make the games as immersive as Dolby Atmos films. However, it was better to get a taste of 3D AudioTech than not hearing it at all.
We talked to friends and family via PS5 using the headset, as well as our Google Meet contacts when the headset was connected to our laptop. Both of us agreed that we sound fine, although not crystal-clear. It was also comparable to a speakerphone. One of the best features of the Pulse3D Headset is its mic monitoring. This allows you to hear your voice when you speak. This is a great feature for first-person shooters, where chat audio can sometimes be lost due to the action. You can also hear yourself clearly.
Sony claims that the Pulse3D Wireless Headset will last 12 hours on one charge. We found that this claim is accurate. It depends on how loud you listen to music, and if you forget to turn them off at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, the 12 hour battery life is three hours shorter than similar headphones by Turtle Beach, Razer, Astro and Turtle Beach. However, it shouldn’t be a problem unless your brain can’t remember to turn on your headphones at the end the day. We’re all guilty of this, but we can help you.
Overall, we were impressed with the headset’s performance. While it may not be the best in soundstage or clarity, its user-friendly setup and workmanlike performance should make most gamers satisfied.
