Did you know that Alexa can make a hands-free phone call? You can make and receive calls with Alexa, as well as make emergency 911 calls. You won’t even need a rotary phone in your living room if you can make phone calls with Alexa. This is how you can make phone calls using Alexa.
Can Alexa make phone calls?
Yes, Alexa-to Alexa calling allows you to call compatible Echo devices and smartphones that have the Alexa app. Free calls can be made to most landline and mobile numbers in the US, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. You cannot dial toll-free or abbreviated numbers, dial-by letter numbers, or international numbers from outside the US, UK and Canada.
Before you can make phone calls, you will need an Amazon account, a number on your mobile, and the latest version of the Alexa App.
Alexa Calling can be used on these Echo devices:
- Echo
- Echo Dot
- Echo Show
- Echo Spot
- Echo Plus
- Echo Auto (Using Alexa Calling to Echo Auto counts towards your plan minute count)
- Echo Input
Echo Input supports voice-only calls, but the device must be connected via a cable to an audio system or speaker. Bluetooth calls are not supported at the moment.
Also, you will need to sign up for the Alexa Calling service. Follow these steps to do so.
How to set up Alexa Calling
Open the Alexa app, and then tap the Communicate button to set up Alexa Calling. You might be asked to enter your phone number and a unique password. Next, tap Communicate and select the contacts icon. If the app asks for access to your contacts, tap Allow.
- Open the Alexa app. Verify that you are using the most recent version.
- Tap Contact. This button looks like a chat bubble at your screen’s bottom.
- Next tap Call.
- Enter your phone number, then press Continue. A verification code will be sent to your mobile phone via text. You can skip the next step if you already have your contacts.
- Enter your verification number and click Continue. The next step is to ask if you want to enable Drop-in. This allows you to talk to Alexa devices within your home. This feature can be enabled or disabled. Click on Later to skip the setup.
- Now you can use Alexa for phone calls to contacts.

- Speak: “Alexa, call [name from your contact list]. You can also use voice commands to make a phone call. You can also say:
- “Alexa, give me a call. “
- Call [201-555-5555] to speak with Alexa.
- “Alexa, dial [John Doe]’s mobile. “
- “Alexa, dial [John Doe] at his home phone. “
- “Alexa, call John Doe at work. “
- “Alexa, please call John Doe’s office. “
- Alexa will dial the number or call the contact. As Alexa calls, the device light will change to green.
- For a call to be ended, say “Alexa hang up” or “Alexa, end call.” “

- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap on the Communicate Icon.
- Next, tap on the Contacts icon. This icon is shaped like a human in the upper right corner of your screen.
- Click the contact to call.
- Call by tapping their number.
- Tap Call.
Can Alexa Answer Phone Calls?
Alexa can answer calls made by callers with compatible Echo devices or Alexa Calling via the app. Alexa can only answer phone calls from a landline or mobile numbers. You will need to connect your Echo to the Echo Connect in order for Alexa to receive calls from regular numbers. This device turns your landline into an intelligent speaker system.
It’s easy to answer a call with Alexa. Here’s how:
- Alexa will speak when the lights around her device turn green, and the ring tone is heard. “
- Say, “Alexa, answer. You can tap the green answer button on an Echo Show device to get answers. If you don’t wish to answer the call, you can say “Ignore”.
- Alexa can pick up the call (or ignore it).
- Speak “Hang up” or tap the End icon to end the call if you’re using the Echo Show.
Can Alexa call 911?
Alexa can’t dial 911 from the box. If you have an Echo Connect and a compatible Echo device, however, Alexa cannot dial 911.
Once your Echo Connect is set up, you can say “Alexa, dial 911”
You can also use Alexa skills to alert someone when you are in need of help. These skills don’t replace 911 and they can’t dial 911 directly.
