How to Login & Change Settings on a Router

Popular Posts

It’s simple to alter the settings on your router. We will walk you through step-by-step how to connect through a browser on the internet, sign in, and access the settings you wish to change.

If you’d like to alter your password for your Wi-Fi at home, network name, or other settings, you’ll have to connect with your router.

In order to do that it is necessary to find the IP address. This can be found by using the ipconfig utility in Windows that we’ll discuss in the next section. It is also possible to determine the IP address of your smartphone by looking at the Wi-Fi information,, as we’ll explain the steps below.

In addition, it is likely that you require the router’s admin password. The majority of routers print this on a label or an e-card that can be removed for convenience.

If you suspect that someone has changed the default router password before and you’re not sure, request it from them as well as reset it back to its factory settings.

If you are unable to connect to your router using Wi-Fi for reasons you can install the Ethernet cable between your router and a laptop or laptop.

Find the router’s IP address in Windows

To begin, you must open Command Prompt by typing “command” in the search box of the Start menu and selecting Command Prompt.

You can also use or hold the Windows keys on your keyboard simultaneously as the ‘R’ then type ‘cmd’ and enter.

Within the window that appears, you can type in ‘config’, then hit Enter. Then you will see the list of network adapters on your computer.

Go through the details to locate the number in the middle of the default gateway. There may be multiple adapters however only one of them should connect to the router, and only one of them will be able to display a number.

These numbers represent the IP address of your router.

Find router IP address using Android or iOS

In iOS Open the Settings app, then choose:

  1. Tap on Wi-Fi
  2. Make sure that your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network of your router.
  3. Click the “i” just to the right name of the network
  4. The IP address of your router will be listed next to the word “Router”

In Android, the settings menus differ between phones, but once you’ve found your Wi-Fi options:

  1. Make sure that your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi network of your router.
  2. Click on the name of the network
  3. Search for a gateway or a ‘router’ item within the listing.

However, some phones fail to show the IP address of the router So you’ll need to make use of a different device in order to determine it. You can also check the signs on the router or in the manual of the router for the default address.

Log in to the router

Equipped with your router’s IP open a browser on the internet and enter the gateway’s default number in the address bar, and then hit Enter. Do not add http:/or prior to your IP address.

Most routers use IP addresses for common routing.

  • 192.168.0.1
  • 192.168.1.254 (BT Home Hubs)
  • 192.168.1.1

In rare circumstances it is possible to add a colon or a port number at the beginning (such for example 192.168.0.1:443) However, the majority of home routers don’t require this.

Now you should be able to see the login screen for your router.

It is likely that you will be required to enter an administrator password in order to make adjustments to the router’s configurations. The password should be recorded on the router. However, in case you have changed it, you must enter the password instead (or If you aren’t sure you’ll need to reset the settings for all devices following the instructions below).

If you don’t have the password, you’ll have to reset the factory settings of your router according to the instructions of the manufacturer. (We have provided a generic guideline below.)

Troubleshooting solutions

If you aren’t seeing a login window, it might be due to the fact that the gateway IP address was manually entered into the network adapter settings.

To verify, go to Windows Control Panel (not the brand new Settings software) and search for “network’. Click the Network Connections tab beneath Network and Sharing Center.

Right-click on the device you are using in order to access the web (typically the wireless type as well as Ethernet for a computer) and then select Properties.

Scroll down until you see Internet Protocol Version 4. Click on it then click on it and then click on the Properties button.

Be sure to get an IP address that is automatically selected, and then you can also get a DNS server address in a timely manner.

Repeat the steps to check whether this fixes the problem.

Reset your router’s username and password.

If you’ve lost the password and username for your router You’ll have to reset it back to default settings. This can be accomplished by pressing a button or inserting a paper clip pin through a reset hole.

Notice: Before you do this, be aware that you’ll lose the settings you’ve created and you may need to enter your broadband username and other details in the event that you don’t have a backup. This shouldn’t be a problem in the event that you have these details available, however.

Find your manual to find out the duration you should press the button for it to be reset. The router needs to connect to the power supply and switch on to function.

After you reset your router, you will need to follow the steps previously mentioned for connecting to the management interface of your router.

If the primary reason you went to the router’s settings was to establish the Wi-Fi network then you are now able to do it. It’s a good idea to change the name of your Wi-Fi network to be memorable, however, it’s essential to create the password.

If you are able, opt for WPA2 instead of WPA3 security instead of WEP.

While you’re there make sure you change the password on the router’s web interface to block anyone else from accessing your router’s settings.

Label the router to ensure you don’t lose the Wi-Fi username, IP address, or username and password for your router.

Extra checks

If you are still unable to access your router’s network be sure that any firewalls in your software are turned off. They could be included in your antivirus or online security programs, or even a standalone program like ZoneAlarm.

Disable them temporarily to determine whether they’re causing the issue. Windows’ built-in firewall should not cause any problems.

You should also look out for additional software like parental control software which could prevent you from accessing specific websites the router’s settings interface is merely an online site.

There may also be settings in your browser that cause an issue, so test a different browser to resolve this as an issue.
