Truecaller, the most popular crowdsourced phone-ID software, has been frequently cited by activists and users alike as a serious privacy risk. The app can upload your entire contact list including phone numbers, email IDs, and location information onto its servers. This can help you identify people calling you but it creates a privacy nightmare for contacts who did not sign up to have their information on third-party servers. If you do not want your phone number to appear in the Truecaller database, follow the guide below to deactivate it and ask the company to unlist it from the searchable database.
Truecaller Database: Remove or Unlist Your Phone Number
Truecaller makes it simpler to spot spammers and scammers. It also blocks spam calls and telemarketers. However, it comes at a high price. It’s not only illegal for non-users to have their numbers on the Truecaller database, but it can also be harmful to users. The app uploads the phone’s IMSI number (International Mobile Subscriber Identity), which can be used to identify anyone. If you are concerned about your privacy, please follow these steps to deactivate Truecaller. Then, you should unlist or remove your number from Truecaller’s database.
This method works regardless of whether or not you are a Truecaller customer. Truecaller users must first deactivate the account before they can request de-listing.
Step 1: Deactivate the Truecaller account
Note: If Truecaller is not installed, there is nothing you can do to disable it.
- First, open Truecaller on the phone. Next, hit the hamburger menu (3 small lines) at the top-left. Tap on Settings in the slide-out panel.
- Select Privacy Centre from the settings menu. Next, choose Deactivate from the page. When asked, confirm.
NOTE: For iOS, tap the profile avatar in the top-left corner of Truecaller’s homepage. Next, go to Settings > Privacy Centre > Deactivate.
Step 2: Remove your phone number from the Truecaller Database
- To request de-listing, go to the Truecaller unlist page. Enter your mobile phone number along with the correct country code and then click on the Unlist Mobile Number button.
- Click on Confirm in the slide-out panel. Within 24 hours, you will receive a message confirming that your number has been removed from the company’s searchable databases.
To verify that your number has been removed, you should return to the site within a few days. Your number may still be searchable after you request de-listing. This could be due to the fact that the profile has been saved locally on the device where you are searching. You can delete your search results from that device and then try again. Clear the cache memory by going to Phone Settings > Apps> Truecaller.
Truecaller allows you to remove your number from their database and regain digital privacy
The de-listing will not prevent your number from showing personal information to other users. It will be removed from the company’s “searchable database”, which means that people can’t search for your number to find information about you. Although it’s not ideal, this is the only option available to the company. It is very similar to other Caller ID apps. This is why you should avoid third-party Called ID apps available from the App Store and Google Play.
