Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 by Ninja Theory is the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

This trailer was revealed at The Game Awards 2019. The Game Awards 2021 was the first time we saw a gameplay trailer. However, we still haven’t been given a release date. We need to know more about the next Senua game.

We’ve been waiting over four years to save the soul of Senua’s lover from Hela. So we’re ready for a sequel. We’ve seen some amazing footage in 2021, so the wait was worth it. Senua’s character modeling is incredible (opens new tab), and the beautiful, bleak world itself.

Senua’s Saga 2: Hellblade 2 is currently not available. However, we know that it will be released for Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S, and PC. On day one, it will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.

Although we would love to see Ninja Theory announce a Hellblade 2 release date in 2022, it seems unlikely. This is based on comments made by the sequel’s chief designer director last year, along with the fact that we are already half-way through the year without much in the way detail.

These comments were made in a June 2021 development update that Ninja Theory released (opens in new window) Tameem Antoniades (Ninja Theory founder and chief designer director) stated that the team is currently working on a “good chunky piece of the game” before moving into full production to complete the rest.

Although the video showed a few snippets from what Ninja Theory had been working on, the fact that even a small portion of the game was not yet complete indicates that there is still time for a full release on the Xbox and PC. It is possible that the game they were working on was the trailer for The Game Awards 2021.

We don’t know what this means for Hellblade 2, but we won’t be able to obtain Senua’s next adventure before at least 2023.

Senua’s Story: Hellblade 2 news

Combat is the key to ‘Raising The Bar’

The Hellblade 2 team is working to improve combat over the original. Interview with Vandal, Spanish website VG247 (opens new tab), Juan Fernandez, combat designer for the original Hellblade, stated that while many things were done well, there were many things that could have been improved and that he would make changes today.

Fernandez explained that the original game had a “very small” team. However, this time, he has a bigger team and more resources and hopes to increase the number of enemies and combat.

He explains that the one thing that made Hellblade 1 less satisfying was the lack of variety in enemies. Long-term combat was not allowed […], because of the way that the difficulty systems were set up. The enemies were too tough, and people were able to find a few movements they like and repeat them often. There were also generous timings for parries and stories that could be balanced more intelligently.

Fernandez stated that the sequel will raise the bar for doing more with less. Although we have more people than the original Hellblade, the quality of our contributions versus those made by the team behind is superior to other similar teams is unmatched.

This will make Hellblade seem like an “indie game”

Tameem Antoniades, co-founder of Ninja Theory, is determined that Hellblade 2 will outshine the original. Interview with NME (opens new tab): Antoniades stated that Hellblade 2’s goal is not to improve the original game, but to make it more real and refined. Its ambition is greater in terms of scale. Hellblade 2 will make Hellblade 2 look more indie-game-like.

Antoniades stated that the goal is to make things appear real or believable, and this includes scouting locations and getting Senua actor Melina Juergens real combat instruction.

Senua’s character model for Senua is extremely detailed

Two images of Senua’s character model have been shared by Ninja Theory, a developer. They are incredible detailed. Ninja Theory doesn’t skimp on the details that make Senua look real, from the snot running down her nose to the creases in her lips.

Its development of skin and eye material using studio references is cited by the developer as a key reason for Senua’s lifelike appearance. We are eager to see Hellblade 2 and Senua in action.

There are no tricks.

After the Hellblade 2 gameplay reveal, Ninja Theory Audio Director David Garcia posted some details on the trailer’s audio to Twitter. Garcia claims that the gameplay trailer was captured entirely in-engine in real time and that almost all of the 3D sounds used Project Acoustics and spatial sound.

Project Acoustics, Microsoft’s wave-acoustics engine that creates interactive 3D experiences using Microsoft’s Wave Acoustics technology. It allows realistic acoustics for 3D environments. Spatial audio is a sound that can be heard from all angles.

Another behind-the scenes look

Ninja Theory offers a behind-the scenes look at Hellblade 2’s development, this time focusing on some of the practical effects being used.

A short video that was shared by the developer’s account on Twitter shows members of the team setting fire to clothing with the caption “Sometimes you have to first destroy.” The team is trying out textural effects on clothing.” A follow-up tweet revealed that the team will be scanning the clothes in high-quality to achieve “an amazing level of detail” for the game.

A behind the scenes look

Updates on Hellblade 2 are very scarce, so fans were glad to see a behind-the scenes update from Melina Juergens, the game’s star.

This video diary focuses on Juergens’ preparation for the role as Senua. It also shows some intense combat training. It does suggest that the video diary will be focused on authentic, realistic combat within the game.

Juergens began a fitness program and also took C.C. weapons training. Smiff was the swordmaster and stunt coordinator for the Star Wars trilogy and Game of Thrones. Game animators took combat classes to be able to provide realistic movements during motion capture sessions.

Juergens revealed that she has chronic pain syndrome fibromyalgia. She explained that her joints, bones, and other parts are constantly in pain. Juergens also suffers from fatigue. Also, I need a lot of recovery time after training.

Watch the video diary below. Juergens stated that there will be more episodes in the future.

Melina Juergens tweets

Melina Juergens (the lead actress in Hellblade) has tweeted a reference to Hellblade 2.

The tweet features a photo of Juergens with Senua’s rune-like scars and patterns, and it is captioned with “For every battle lost, a greater battle takes place”. Senua’s Saga-related tags are also included. The tweet doesn’t indicate whether Juergens is actually working on the game, or if she is simply showing fans her in-character makeup.
