Mid-March sees the release of the best-selling open-world heist game to PS5 or Xbox Series X, but at different pricing
Many games are not upgraded to a new generation of consoles , let alone twice. After its initial release on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V will finally receive an “enhanced-and expanded” version on PS5/X/S this month. However, there is one catch: Grand Theft Auto V will cost $20 less on Sony’s new-generation console.
VGC reported that pre-orders have opened in certain territories for the new GTA V version, which will launch digitally on March 17. The standard price for the full package includes both story mode as well as GTA Online. The game will be 50% off Xbox Series X/S, and 75% on for the next three-months. GTA Online will no longer be available on PS5, but players will still need PS Plus in order to play it.
This is getting confusing, so let’s simplify it a little more.

- The GTA Online discount price for the Xbox Series X/S is $10
- GTA Online discount price on PS5: Free
VGC explains that this price difference is due to an existing promotion for GTA online to be free on PS5. The new-gen GTAV version comes with both online and story modes. Xbox Series X/S owners can’t just buy the single-player campaign for $10. For a game that was released almost a decade ago, I have already done too many math calculations.
The GTA upgraded version includes three graphics modes and faster load times. There are also many improvements to vehicle variety, vegetation density and lighting. You can also move characters between different gen versions online and have a one-time story. Players’ saves will be transferred, but only once. This data can be transferred between PS4, Xbox One and PS5 but not between Xbox Series X/S or Xbox Series X/S. Any GTA$ currency that was purchased previously must remain within the console’s family.
Three months after the pandemic, Rockstar Games first announced GTA for PS5/X/S . It was delayed significantly, as with almost all things. The game is still selling like gangbusters. Take-Two, the publisher, announced that had exceeded 155 million cumulative sales last year. Perhaps that’s why hasn’t been in a hurry to release GTA6 anytime soon. This is especially considering the increasing expectations for it being one of the most successful games ever, due to GTA5’s success.
