Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Viking Adventure

+Funniest series game+Eivor is a brilliant protagonist+Every hub bursts full of life

Avoidable reasons

-A vast open world can feel sparse. Plot never gets invested.

Platforms: Xbox One and Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S . PS4, PS5. PC and Google Stadia.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla may be the best place to try if you ever imagined yourself living the Viking lifestyle of raiding, sailing and pillaging.

In recent years, Assassin’s Creed games began to shift towards RPGs. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was the latest. We gave Assassin’s Creed Valhalla 3.5 out of 5 stars in our review. We also praised the game’s iconic protagonist Eivor, who’ll be your main companion on your epic adventure through the Viking Age.

Valhalla is not only one of the most popular RPGs but also makes it onto our best PS5 and best Xbox Series X games .

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

You are about to lose your sleep

+A lot of mods for PC+Hundreds of hours gameplay+Choices in how you play+Huge open-world

Avoidable reasons

Bugs and glitches

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Xbox One. PS4. PC. Nintendo Switch.

Skyrim is a ten-year old RPG, but it’s still a vital and important game. This is largely due to its amazing mod scene on PC. You can give this game another chance if you haven’t played it since 2011. It’s almost like Skyrim 1.5.

Bethesda also has The Elder Scrolls V – Skyrim Special Edition. This includes all the add-ons and some graphical updates. You can also purchase The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim VR for PS4 and PC if you own a VR headset. This will give you an even more immersive experience.

You haven’t played it all. It’s possible to spend hundreds upon hours in this open-world fantasy epic without ever having to tackle the main story. This game is unlike any other, as it has a rich world that you can explore without being forced to choose one “hero”.

While we won’t reveal the story, let’s just say that it has more dragons than Game of Thrones and that you can even use some dragon power. Skyrim is a great RPG and worth the effort before The Elder.

+Some of the most brilliant writing in gaming+Wonderful music and soundtrack+A truly unique RPG

Avoidable reasons

– Not for action enthusiasts

Platforms Available:Nintendo Switch (PS4, PS5, Xbox One), Xbox Series X (Xbox Series S), and Google Stadia

Disco Elysium, one of the best titles of 2019, is a dialogue-driven RPG that takes place in a large, dystopian city.

Instead of fighting, the problems are solved by the protagonist using the “Thought Cabinet”, a collection of dialogue choices, and thematic decisions, that permeate every aspect of the story.

Although it’s risky, it pays off due to the personable, politically ambiguous writing that almost exclusively is player-driven. RPG enthusiasts should play it. We recommend the Final Cut edition, which includes voice acting and additional content.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Image credit: Sega)

Yakuza: Like the Dragon

Unbelievable RPG

+Huilarious and original+Side missions can be just as interesting+Great entry into Yakuza series

Avoidable reasons

-Some elements may feel old

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

The Yakuza games have always incorporated mature themes with outrageous shenanigans. Yakuza: Like A Dragon is no exception. The game’s long and complicated story is still full of plot points, but the fighting system has been reimagined as a turn-based JRPG. It works surprising well.

Each character has the ability to take on different classes such as a singer or a J-Pop idol. They also have their own strengths and weaknesses in battle. This is a very different approach but it really lets the series’ freak flag fly.

Persona 5 Royal (Image credit: ATLUS)

Persona 5 Royal

A great made better

+Upgrades to mechanics, enemies and new content+Challenging combat+Over 100hrs of gameplay

Avoidable reasons

-Might be too long to some

Platforms available: PS4

Persona 5 is a JRPG that’s stylish and unique. Its animation, character designs and acid-jazz-inspired soundtrack are all cool.

Persona 5 tells the story of a group jaded teens who ‘change the hearts’ evildoers. It touches on themes such as abuse and breaking away from social norms. Persona 5’s characters and story are rich and complex and only grow over the course of the 100-hour campaign.

The 2020 Royal version is a mix of social sims and dungeon-crawlers with great turn-based combat. New characters, battle elements, a completely new dungeon, and a new semester are all part of the 2020 Royal version. This is the ultimate version of PS4’s best JRPG.

Demon’s Souls (Image credit to Sony Interactive Entertainment)

Demon’s Souls

Devilishly delightful

+Next-gen visuals+Super fast load times+Atmospheric location

Avoidable reasons

Extreme difficulty can deter many-Clunky lock on system-Can feel overwhelming

Platforms available: PS5

Demon’s Souls, a PS5 exclusive, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful action RPGs that you can play on Sony’s new console. It’s stunning to look at, with its incredible lighting and hulking bosses as well as the amazing texture detail. It also has a very low load time, with level transitions taking only three seconds.

Demon’s Souls is a remake of the 2009 PlayStation 3 title, but with many improvements. It will challenge your gaming skills with its difficult difficulty. If you can persevere, however, the reward is unmatched. Be prepared to suffer hundreds of deaths before you triumphantly emerge.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

There are many myths and monsters

+Remarkable characters+A vast and varied open-world+Plenty of activities outside the main quests

Avoidable reasons

Long load times can make it feel cumbersome.

S coming in late 2022)

The Witcher 3 is a great western RPG that tells a great story. The Witcher 3 has more great storytelling in its side quests than any other game’s main storylines.

Geralt is a gruff, grey-haired monster hunter guy, and a kind of heroic land pirate type. This deep-diving adventure is one you will want to put aside a few months for, much like Skyrim.

They battle it out for the favorite accessible beards or swords RPGs. However, The Witcher 3 wins the writing and moody-faced adult themes awards. Although it feels natural to compare the two, Skyrim is a largely first-person game while The Witcher 3 works in third person like other Witcher titles.
