Our top picks for laptops

We’ve reviewed many laptops over the years and have learned what to avoid and which ones to buy when there are savings. Below are the prices of some of our favorite laptops. See if any have dropped enough to pique your interest.

Our favorite Windows laptop is the Dell XPS13 (9310)

The return of the king

Gorgeous design

Massive CPU and GPU increases

Battery life is excellent

Lacklustre audio

It’s an understatement to say that the Dell XPS 13 is a big fan. The 13-inch Ultrabook has been a regular fixture on our list of the top laptops for many years. There’s good reasons.

It was released in 2020 as the Dell XPS 13 9310. The latest Intel 11th-generation processors are used, while the Intel Iris Xe handles integrated graphics. This model is almost twice as powerful as the previous one. These laptops are powered by both the Intel Iris Xe and Intel 11th generation processors. Light gaming is possible due to the specifications.

These laptops have very few bezels. They can also be configured with Full HD+ and a 4K HDR screens (OLED panels available). Although the XPS 13 is sleek, ports are not available. The speakers are a bit dull, but these are minor issues in a premium laptop.

Our favourite Apple laptop: Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

The best MacBook Air ever

Graphics: Apple M1 GPU

Battery life is excellent

Silent in use

Performance could be affected by fanless design

There is no new design

It was a game-changer for the entire laptop market, Apple or not. In 2020, Apple switched from Intel’s chips to its own M1 silicon. The MacBook Air’s new processor provides a significant performance boost. However, it has not reduced battery life. Our testing showed that it can last for an impressive 11 hours and 15 mins in continuous movie playback.

Despite its significant power upgrade, Apple priced the laptop at a lower RRP than its predecessor. It even gives premium Ultrabooks like the Dell XPS 13 a run for the money – something that we would never have expected from Apple. The model with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SATA SSD will cost you AU$1,499, while the 512GB SSD version will cost you AU$1,849.

We recommend the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1, 2020 if you have a few hundred dollars to spare. This will give you better sound quality, a more comfortable keyboard, and a handy Touch Bar. The MacBook Pro has cooling fans, while the MacBook Air does not. This means that it can run more demanding tasks without having to throttle performance.

Our favorite gaming laptop: Asus ROG Zephyrus g14

Asus leads AMD’s charge towards dominance

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS – 9 4900HS | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 | RAM: 16GB – 32GB | Screen: 14-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS panel, 120Hz – 14-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS panel, 60Hz | Storage: 512GB – 1TB SSD

Gaming laptops have the longest battery life

Outstanding performance

Slim and light

Reasonably priced

There is no webcam

Fans can get loud

The Asus ROG Zephyrus is the best gaming laptop. The Zephyrus G14 is equipped with AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series and 5000 series processors. Asus and Nvidia have teamed up to bring the most recent RTX cards to this laptop.

Despite its impressive power, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop is affordable and available for a fair bit less than other competitors. The laptop doesn’t have a webcam and isn’t as attractive as Razer laptops around the world.

The Zephyrus G14 laptop is thin and lightweight, with a long battery life.

Our favorite 2-in-1: AsuszenBook Flip 13

You get a 2-in-1 laptop experience that is simple and without compromise

Graphics: Intel Iris Xe

Quality construction

Battery life is excellent

Speakers that are truly excellent

Poor graphics performance

With its 360deg hinge, the Asus ZenBook Flip 13 can be used as a tablet, laptop, or tent. It is also able to move easily between tablet, tablet, and tent modes. Asus claims it will last for up to 20,000 cycles. It is a stylish, solidly constructed piece of kit and comes with Intel’s 11th generation chips. This makes it a powerful 2-in-1 laptop.

The body houses a 13-inch screen. It has ultra-thin bezels on each side. This allows you to get the best out of the 1080p display. Harman Kardon’s front-facing speakers sound great, something that can be difficult to find on laptops.

Asus thought of clever ways to keep the number pad in place, even though space is limited. It has been integrated into the trackpad and illuminated LED lights indicate when it is needed. We find this to be quite impressive.

Our favourite cheap student laptop: Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook

A Chromebook for schoolwork and more

Graphics: Mali-G72

Portable and light weight

Great value

Chrome OS is great

Trackpad and keyboard are tiny and finicky

A single port is shared by headphones and charger

The MacBook Air is the best choice for students if you have the money. However, if you don’t have the budget, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook will be a good option. You’ll only pay AU$499 for the 2-in-1 unit, which comes with a stand cover and a keyboard detachable.

While the internal specs may not be impressive, Chrome OS is what matters. We found it to be more enjoyable than Windows 10S. Google’s amazing apps will be at your fingertips so it’s perfect for anyone who does most of their schoolwork online (using Google Docs or the like).

Although you won’t be capable of loading up Chrome tabs at will, the Duet is perfect for web browsing and video streaming. This is the best value for money you will find in a mobile device of this type.
