Are we the only ones finding it more difficult to figure out how to watch Star Trek in an orderly fashion each year? Even the most accomplished starship captains would find it difficult to watch Star Trek in the right order, with so many series being presented on the big and small screen. Trekkies, we have you covered!
You’d be wrong to think that Marvel was the most complex franchise on the planet if you tried to view them in the order. But we’re not kidding, it’s nothing like Star Trek. The sci-fi franchise, which is 55 years old, includes nine TV shows (soon to become 11) and thirteen movies. It spans 1000+ years making it a very complex and extensive timeline.
What is the best way for Star Trek to be viewed in order? It all depends. You might want to view this franchise by its release date for those Trekkie purists. You can follow the original Trekkies’ journey and have a similar experience. It is possible to see a larger picture of the timeline, even though it jumps around. Star Trek Discovery is set in the 32nd century, but was released before Star Trek : Picard.

The chronological order of Star Trek movies and TV shows
If you want to know how to watch Star Trek, this is the list for you. This is where things get really exciting, since Star Trek TV and movies have a tendency to jump around the franchise’s timeline with sequels, prequels, and bits in between. You can even have two timelines. We’ll explain everything.
Original Series, Next Generation TV shows and first ten movies created the ‘Prime’ timeline. The alternate timeline ‘Kelvin was created in JJAbrams’ first Star Trek (2009,) to allow the Enterprise crew of Kirk and Spock to continue their adventures, while not contradicting canon. We have separated the timelines to avoid confusion.
However, this list does not include all the short Short Treks. These stories are set mostly around Star Trek: Discovery and involve Starfleet crews that time-travel to eras prior to any of the movies or shows. The upcoming Discovery spinoff Star Trek Section 31 has been left out, as it is not yet in production. We are not certain when it will be.
