How to fix “No Internet Access” errors in Windows

Let’s start by briefly describing the steps required to fix “connected but not internet access” errors. Then, we’ll go into more detail about each one.

  2. Reboot your PC
  3. Reboot your router and modem
  4. Disable VPN connections
  5. Use the Windows network troubleshooter

  7. Verify the status of your ISP

What does it mean to be connected with no internet?

Before we get started, let’s explain what happens to your network when you have Wi-Fi but no internet. It’s important to first explain the basics of home networking.

Your router can be connected to wireless devices like laptops. Your router manages the network connections between the devices in your house. The router plugs into a modem that connects your home network to the wider Internet.

If you see errors messages such as Connected with no internet access, Connected with internet, this means your computer is correctly connected to the router but cannot reach the internet. If you see Not Connected, No Internet or There are no internet connection messages it could be that your computer has not been connected to the router.

1. Confirm that other devices are not able to connect.

Before you start troubleshooting, make sure to check that your PC is connected to the internet. Check if your computer is connected to the Wi-Fi network using your phone or another device. You can also try streaming a YouTube video to verify.

You’ll notice a X icon in your status bar. This indicates that you are connected to your mobile network and can access data. iPhone and iPad users can visit settings > Wi-Fi to check for a no Internet Connection message.

Your computer may not be connecting but other computers will. This is most likely because of a problem with your configuration. If you don’t have internet access on all devices, it is likely that your network equipment is the problem. You can therefore skip the PC-only steps listed below.

If the problem is affecting all of your devices, it’s worth performing a quick test before you move forward. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable connecting your modem and router and connect it directly to your computer.

This setup will allow you to get online. If you don’t get the solution to your problem, it is possible that your router is faulty.

2. Reboot your PC

If your problem is widespread, this step may not be necessary.

Rebooting your computer is the first step to troubleshoot any issue. You might be able to fix your network connection problem by restarting if you are lucky.

This advice assumes that you are using Wi-Fi connections, as they tend to have more problems. To make sure your cable is not faulty, however, you can connect to your router using an Ethernet cable.

3. Reboot your Modem and Router

Rebooting your router and modem is a good idea since most network problems involve them. Although some routers allow you to reboot via an interface, this is not necessary. You can simply unplug both devices and let them rest for a while. If there’s one, you can use the physical power button.

First, plug the modem into your router, and then let it boot up. Allow them to restart after a while. While you wait, verify that your modem and router are functioning properly. You may have bad network hardware if you don’t see any light on one device or if the lights flash in an unusual pattern or appear red.

You are not actually resetting your equipment, but simply restarting it. Resetting is the process of restoring your device to its default settings. You don’t have to do this yet.

4. Disable VPN Connections

A VPN not only offers many benefits but also adds an extra layer to your internet connection. Your VPN could be the problem. If you are connected too long, your computer is not responding or the server is full, a VPN may stop working.

Disable the VPN if you are using it through an app or a Windows manual connection. Then try to connect again. To reduce the number variables, you can keep the VPN off while you troubleshoot the problem.

5. Start the Windows Network Troubleshooter

If your problem is widespread, this step may not be necessary.

If your Windows PC is having issues, it’s likely that something is wrong with the network settings. Although the built-in Windows troubleshooter is not able to fix most issues, it’s worth giving it a shot before moving on to more advanced options.

To access the Windows 10 network troubleshooter, visit Settings>> Network & Internet > Status. Follow the steps to determine if Windows can fix the problem. This same tool is available on Windows 11 at Settings>> System > Troubleshoot> Other troubleshooters> Internet Connections.

6. Verify your IP address settings

If your problem is widespread, this step may not be necessary.

Next, check that your computer is connected to the Internet using an IP address. Normal circumstances will see the router give an address to connected devices. Your computer’s IP settings may not be correct and cause “no internet access” or “WiFi doesn’t possess a valid configuration” error.
